maicolpue house
Concept Commission – Maicolpue, Chile
2 bedroom | 2 bathroom | 90m²
Conceived for a steep and narrow site overlooking the harbour of Maicolpue, Chile, this 90 m² project was designed to replace a precarious existing dwelling with a compact yet generous home. The brief called for privacy and uninterrupted views of the water from all living spaces and bedrooms—a challenge given the constrained lot and close neighbours. The solution was a two-story arrangement: the upper level housing living, dining, kitchen, guest bedroom, and bath; the lower level dedicated to the master suite. This configuration ensures that each room opens to the harbour.
The structure was envisioned in SIP panels for efficiency in time and cost, clad in local wood to root the house in its forested setting, and roofed in slate sourced from a nearby quarry. The living area, lifted above the slope and articulated with a bow window on all sides, evokes the presence of a lighthouse—anchoring the house as both lookout and shelter.
